Rehearsal and Recitals:

  • Rehearsal: Friday, May 8th, 2026
  • Recital: Saturday, May 9th, 2026, both matinee & evening

Hair

BALLET: Proper Ballet Bun with hairnet. A middle/center part works well with a classical Ballet bun and makes things easier with bangs that might not make it into the ponytail.

There are many YouTube videos on how to do a secure dance bun. The only change I would make to this video is to use hairpins, instead of bobby pins.

A HAIR NET is a must, so please don’t skip this step!  The hair net is wrapped over top of the bun (you can wrap it twice) and pinned.  The extra netting can then be wound around, tucked under the bun, and also pinned.  This will keep everything in place. Aim for a Ballet bun that is as flat as possible.

There are hairnets for sale in the lobby (50 cents each; leave payment inside canister).  You can also purchase a durable crocheted ballet bun net that is suitable for class (not Recital). These are also available in the lobby.

ALL OTHER CLASSES: A Ballet bun is ideal for all classes. Acceptable hair for Jazz, Acro, Contemporary, Tap and Hip Hop is a ponytail that doesn’t require frequent re-tying in the middle of class. Use two elastics to eliminate the need to re-do hair.

If hair is very long, a ponytail is not safe for either the dancer or anyone close to them (turns and Acro tricks).  A Ballet bun or French Braid will keep hair from whipping anyone in the face.

Bobby Pins? Hairpins?

Hairpins are a must for buns. Bobby pins will work their way out and not hold.

Bobby pins are a must for securing hairpieces. Hairpins won’t grip the hair piece and will slide out. Cross two bobby pins in an ‘X’ to secure a hair piece. Repeat until the hairpiece feels secure.

Trust us on this one!

Makeup

Picture Day: ‘Daytime’ makeup at the most! Please avoid an overly theatrical look. Dancers should NOT look as though they are made up for a stage performance for their pictures.

Recital: Makeup is a fun part of the theatrical world and being ‘stage-ready’ and we encourage our dance families to enjoy the experience. Stage lighting washes out facial features and without a little extra colour, performers look featureless.

  • Foundation and loose powder to set foundation
  • Blush: pink is most flattering
  • Lipstick: pink
  • Eyeshadow and eyeliner: soft greys or browns. PLEASE, NO BLUE!
  • Mascara: if you don’t like/can’t use mascara a soft liner can help define eyes.
